Sean Carroll is a physicist and a research professor of physics at California Institute of Technology.


The Big Picture: On the Origins of Life, Meaning, and the Universe Itself explores our place in the universe from a scientific worldview. The book ranges in topics from the origins of the universe, the evolution of life on Earth, and the great philosophical questions of human existence.

Interesting Ideas

Though common knowledge, it is still interesting to contemplate that there are over 100 billion stars in our galaxy and over 100 billion galaxies in the universe.

His commentary of the future of the universe and the universe lasting literally forever was very imaginative. He talked about the big bang 14 billion years ago, expanding and accelerating space, and the future of stars in the entire universe.

Carroll commented on the meaning of life, which he said is a fundamentally individual and subjective enterprise.

He talked about the greatest phase transitions in the history of the cosmos which was very interesting for perspective. Some examples included the formation of protons and neutrons in the early universe, the formation of the first stars, the origin of life, the origin of consciousness, the origin of language, and the invention of machines and technology.

Towards the end of the book Carroll listed “10 Considerations” as opposed to 10 commandments. Some of these included that life is one shot, that we can always improve, and that it is up to us to improve the world around us
